In a record-shattering night at the Gabba, the Brisbane Heat pulled off what can only be described as a cricketing miracle against the Perth Scorchers. The 6th match of the BBL 2025-26 season, played on December 19, 2025, will go down in history as one of the most explosive T20 fixtures ever witnessed. With a staggering total of 515 runs scored across less than 40 overs, the Heat chased down a mountainous target of 258 to secure an 8-wicket victory with just one ball to spare.
Scorchers’ Batting Blitzkrieg
The Perth Scorchers, after being sent in to bat, wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Despite an early setback when Mitchell Marsh fell for just 3 runs in the second over, the Scorchers launched a relentless assault. Finn Allen and Cooper Connolly combined for a devastating partnership that tore the Heat’s bowling attack apart. Allen was particularly destructive, smashing 79 runs off 38 deliveries, including eight towering sixes. His aggression was matched by the young Cooper Connolly, who contributed a quick-fire 77 from 37 balls, hitting six fours and six sixes.
The Scorchers’ momentum continued throughout the middle and late overs. Aaron Hardie added a brisk 23 off 12 balls, while Nick Hobson’s cameo of 26 from 11 deliveries at the death propelled the total to a massive 257/6. Xavier Bartlett was the most successful bowler for the Heat, claiming 2/44, while Shaheen Afridi, Jack Wildermuth, Liam Haskett, and Matthew Kuhnemann each picked up a wicket. However, the sheer volume of runs made the task ahead for Brisbane look nearly impossible.

A Historic Run Chase Begins
The Brisbane Heat’s response began in the worst possible fashion. Captain Colin Munro was dismissed for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings, caught by Ashton Agar off the bowling of Jhye Richardson. At 1/0, the Gabba faithful might have feared a short night. However, what followed was a partnership for the ages between Matt Renshaw and Jack Wildermuth. The duo didn’t just rebuild; they counter-attacked with a level of ferocity that left the Scorchers’ bowlers searching for answers.
Renshaw, often characterized by his traditional technique, reinvented himself as a T20 powerhouse. He raced to a century in just 48 balls, eventually falling for 102 from 51 deliveries. His innings was punctuated by five boundaries and nine sixes, providing the perfect anchor for the chase. Alongside him, Jack Wildermuth played the innings of his life. Having conceded 47 runs with the ball earlier in the evening, Wildermuth redeemed himself spectacularly with the bat. He remained unbeaten on 110 from 54 balls, striking five fours and matching Renshaw with nine sixes of his own.
The Final Flourish and Match Result
The partnership between Renshaw and Wildermuth reached a record-breaking 212 runs, a feat that brought the target within reach. Even after Renshaw was run out in the 16th over by a sharp piece of fielding from Laurie Evans and Finn Allen, the Heat did not stumble. Max Bryant stepped in and maintained the required run rate, contributing 28 runs from 16 balls before being forced to retire hurt with just two balls remaining in the match.
The tension reached its peak in the final over, with Brisbane needing 9 runs. Despite the pressure, Wildermuth remained calm, guiding the Heat to 258/2 with one ball remaining. The Perth Scorchers’ bowlers, who had looked so formidable in previous matches, struggled to contain the carnage. Jhye Richardson finished with 1/49, while the rest of the attack, including Brody Couch and Ashton Agar, went wicketless and conceded runs at high economy rates.
This victory marked the highest successful run chase in Big Bash League history, eclipsing the previous record of 230. Matt Renshaw was rightfully named Player of the Match for his heroic century, but the night belonged to the collective spirit of the Brisbane Heat, who turned a daunting mountain into a historic milestone.
