In a high-stakes encounter at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, India delivered a clinical performance to defeat arch-rivals Pakistan by 61 runs in the 27th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. On a challenging surface that offered grip and turn, India’s superior adaptability and bowling depth ensured they remained unbeaten in Group A, securing their spot in the Super 8 stage with a dominant 8-1 head-to-head record against Pakistan in T20 World Cups.
Kishan’s Fireworks Ignite the Indian Innings
After being put in to bat, India faced an immediate setback when Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for just 1 run in the opening over, caught off the bowling of Salman Ali Agha. However, this early jolt only served to spark a ferocious counter-attack from Ishan Kishan. The left-handed opener appeared to be batting on a different surface than his peers, blending brute force with precision to dismantle the Pakistani bowling attack.
Kishan hammered a swashbuckling 77 off just 40 deliveries, a knock decorated with 10 boundaries and 3 towering sixes. He dominated an 87-run partnership with Tilak Varma, where Varma largely played a supporting role, contributing 25 off 24 balls. At one point, India looked set for a total well beyond 190 as they cruised at 10 runs per over. However, the introduction of Saim Ayub turned the momentum back toward Pakistan. Ayub’s off-spin proved lethal on the slow pitch, as he cleaned up Kishan in the 9th over and later trapped Varma LBW, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 25.

Middle-Order Stability and a Strong Finish
The dismissal of Kishan and a golden duck for Hardik Pandya threatened to derail the innings, leaving India at 126/4. Captain Suryakumar Yadav then took charge, playing a measured innings of 32 from 29 balls. Eschewing his usual flamboyant style for a more responsible approach, Yadav anchored the middle overs alongside Shivam Dube.
The duo added a vital 33 runs, ensuring India didn’t collapse under the pressure of the turning ball. Dube contributed a useful 27 off 17 balls, including a massive six, while Rinku Singh provided the final flourish with an unbeaten 11 off 4 balls. Despite Shaheen Afridi’s efforts at the death, where he picked up the wickets of Dube and Axar Patel, India finished on a competitive 175/7. Yadav later remarked that on this “tacky” wicket, the score was 15 to 20 runs above par.
Pakistan’s Chase Crumbles Under Pressure
Chasing 176, Pakistan’s innings never found its rhythm, beginning with a disastrous Powerplay. Hardik Pandya set the tone with a wicket-maiden in the first over, dismissing Sahibzada Farhan for a duck. Jasprit Bumrah then doubled the misery, removing Saim Ayub and captain Salman Ali Agha in quick succession. By the end of the fifth over, Pakistan was reeling at 34/4 after Babar Azam was outfoxed by an under-cutter from Axar Patel that crashed into his stumps.
Usman Khan provided the only significant resistance for Pakistan, scoring a gritty 44 off 34 balls. He struck six boundaries and a six, briefly keeping the chase alive, but the mounting asking rate and lack of support from the other end eventually led to his downfall, stumped off Axar Patel’s bowling.
Spinners and Pacers Combine for the Kill
Once the top order was dismantled, India’s bowling unit operated like a well-oiled machine. The spinners capitalized on the gripping surface, with Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel both claiming two wickets apiece. Kuldeep Yadav and Tilak Varma also chipped in, ensuring there were no easy runs for the lower order.
Shaheen Afridi swung his bat for a late 23 not out, but it was far too little, too late. Hardik Pandya returned to wrap up the tail, bowling Usman Tariq in the 18th over to bundle Pakistan out for 114. The 61-run margin marked India’s largest victory by runs against Pakistan in T20 Internationals, underscoring a gulf in class between the two sides on the night. With this victory, India moves confidently into the Super 8s, while Pakistan faces a steep climb to keep their tournament hopes alive.
