India (Women) Won by 8 Wickets
India begin their five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with the opening match at the ACA-VDCA Stadium, Visakhapatnam. Coming soon after the Women’s ODI World Cup, the series is an important opportunity for both teams as they build towards the T20 World Cup 2026.
With the World Cup on the horizon, this series will act as a testing ground for combinations and squad depth. India will look to carry forward the momentum from the ODI format into T20 cricket, while Sri Lanka will aim to answer key questions as they fine-tune their preparations.
Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India bring a balanced mix of experience and young talent. Sri Lanka, under the leadership of Chamari Athapaththu, will be keen to make a strong start and prove their credentials. The buzzing Vizag crowd adds to the excitement, setting the stage for an intense contest.
Both teams will be eager to open the series with a win. Will India assert their dominance at home, or can Sri Lanka rise to the challenge and spring an early surprise? The battle begins tonight, and an exciting clash is on the cards.
India began the five-match T20I series in style with a convincing eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the opener at Vizag. After winning the toss, India chose to bowl first and executed their plans perfectly, limiting Sri Lanka to 121/6.
India’s bowlers kept things tight throughout the innings. Debutant Vaishnavi Sharma impressed with a disciplined spell in the middle overs, conceding runs at an economy of just four. The sustained pressure made it difficult for the Sri Lankan batters to build momentum.
Chasing a manageable target, India made light work of the task and reached the total with more than five overs to spare. Jemimah Rodrigues led the way with a classy half-century, anchoring the chase and ensuring a comfortable finish.
The victory underlined India’s all-round strength and set the tone for the rest of the series. With the T20 World Cup 2026 approaching, the strong start provides a timely confidence boost. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to regroup and put in a stronger performance in the next match.

Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka Captain):
“120 isn’t a good total to defend; we’ve made too many mistakes in the middle. We need to play positive cricket, assess the conditions better. We can’t blame the conditions; we’re professionals. We have to bounce back in the next game, improve our batting. As a captain, I lead from the front – unfortunately, I got out early today.”
Harmanpreet Kaur (India Captain):
“We did well with bat and ball, but we’re working hard on our fielding – dropping catches isn’t good. The wet conditions weren’t ideal, but it’s no excuse. We wanted to chase and it went well. It’s better to go with the situation and show a better approach. We’re playing after a long time, so we didn’t want to overcomplicate things.”
Jemimah Rodrigues (Player of the Match):
“My mindset was to make the most of being in good touch. I assessed the conditions – it was sticky, not as flat as expected. I just kept going, reacting to the ball and playing on its merit. We’ve been doing well; now it’s about looking ahead to the T20 World Cup 2026. I was prepared for Shashini Gimhani, our analyst, told us to watch her videos.”
