The iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is set to echo once again with the roars of cricket fans. In a landmark decision, the Karnataka state government has officially granted the “go-ahead” for the venue to host Indian Premier League (IPL) fixtures and international matches starting with the 2026 season.
The announcement comes as a massive relief for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and millions of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) supporters. The stadium had been under a cloud of uncertainty following a tragic stampede in June 2025 during RCB’s title celebrations, which led to the venue being declared “fundamentally unsafe” for large-scale gatherings.
The Path to Clearance: Safety Reforms and the D’Cunha Report
The government’s decision follows a rigorous review process and the submission of a detailed report by a state-appointed task force. Central to this clearance was the implementation of recommendations from the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Commission, which investigated the lapses during the 2025 incident.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar confirmed that the Cabinet approved the resumption of cricket activities after verifying the KSCA’s commitment to safety upgrades. The “in-principle” approval granted earlier has now transitioned into formal permission, provided the stadium adheres to strict new protocols. These include enhanced crowd management systems, redesigned entry and exit points to prevent bottlenecks, and the installation of over 300 AI-powered cameras to monitor spectator movement in real-time.
The KSCA, now under the leadership of former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad, has been working tirelessly to meet these mandates. Prasad noted that the infrastructure-related works, which were prioritized throughout January, are in their final stages, ensuring the venue meets international safety standards.

Ending the Relocation Rumors for IPL 2026
For months, speculation was rife that RCB might have to play their home games at alternative venues like Pune or Navi Mumbai. The loss of the Chinnaswamy Stadium would have been a significant blow to the franchise, both culturally and financially, given the stadium’s reputation as one of the most vibrant atmospheres in the league.
With the state government’s nod, the “Ball is now in RCB’s court,” according to KSCA officials. The franchise is expected to finalize its home schedule shortly, bringing elite T20 cricket back to the heart of Bengaluru. The decision also ensures that the city remains a primary contender for future international fixtures, including potential matches for the men’s T20 World Cup, from which it was initially excluded due to the safety suspension.
A Modern Venue with a Focus on Sustainability
Beyond safety, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium continues to lead as a pioneer in stadium technology. It remains the first cricket stadium in the world to utilize solar panels to generate a bulk of its electricity. This “Go Green” initiative, coupled with a world-class SubAir drainage system that allows play to resume within minutes of heavy rain, makes it a vital asset for the BCCI.
The government’s directive also emphasizes “urban mobility.” New plans include better coordination with the Bengaluru Metro and local law enforcement to ensure that the influx of 40,000 fans does not paralyze the city’s central business district.
Restoring the Pride of Karnataka Cricket
The return of cricket to Chinnaswamy is being viewed as more than just a logistical victory; it is a restoration of local pride. Deputy CM Shivakumar described the stadium as a “matter of Bengaluru and Karnataka’s pride,” asserting that the government would ensure such tragic incidents do not recur.
While the memory of the June 2025 tragedy remains a somber chapter in the stadium’s history, the current reforms signal a commitment to a safer future. Fans can now look forward to March 2026, when the gates of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will open again, marking a new era of security and sporting excellence for one of India’s most beloved cricketing cathedrals.
